1. a form of meat preparation where pieces of meat such as lamb, chicken, beef, etc., are placed on a vertical rotating spit and slowly grilled, pieces of meat being shaved off and served, usually in pita bread with vegetables and dressing.
2. the vertical grill and spit.
3. the shavings of meat taken from it.
4. a meat dish prepared in a way that resembles this: chicken shawarma.
